We had a fantastic time at Bearwood Primary School last Thursday and last Saturday. On Thursday we worked with the whole school over the course of the day (children aged 4 - 11 years old) to have a go at medieval cookery and archaeological excavation. I've never seen such a hungry bunch devouring broad bean pottage! In the archaeological test pit we found lots of stones, but also a piece of pottery and some clay pipe. On Saturday we repeated the same activities to show parents and community members what we had been doing. We found more (older) pottery this time. Overall the whole week at Bearwood was a great success and what a fantastic way for the children to learn about the Magna Carta, democracy, the law, and history. I am reliably informed even maths lessons had a medieval theme!
And then. . .
No rest for the learning team of Poole Museum. We've welcomed schools learning about old toys this week. We're also in the throes of finalising the details of Summer holiday activities (keep an eye on our what's on page) and planning our Autumn programme. Over the summer there's lots of free family fun - historical craft and cooking demos at Scaplen's Court - all free, and a tactile trail in the Museum galleries.
And although I don't want to wish time away I am very excited about the Autumn - we've got some great plans for the Big Draw in October. We'll be offering story and draeing sessions for pre-schoolers and also working with the Children's Centres to deliver these and have a plan to do some Manga style comic strips with specially selected young people. More to follow. This just is just a teaser, more details nearer the time.
Behind the scenes
Planning events and delivering workshops to schools is bread and butter work for us, but there's lots more that we do. We're also currently working on a new exhibition strategy and a digital strategy. Both of these will lay out our vision over the next few years for much greater involvement. It's early days yet, but I hope to talk about this a lot more in the near future. We want to work with you so much more. . .
