This week one of the learning team has written a guest blog. I have the pleasure of introducing Abby. Abby has a background in biological sciences so it's great to have her on the team.
I’m Abby and I’m a Learning Activity Leader with Poole Museum Service.
Now that spring has well and truly sprung and summer is just around the corner, one of our most popular workshops is ‘Minibeasts’.
This involves hunting for bugs in the woodland at Upton Country Park and then getting out our nets for some pond dipping.
The pond at Upton needed a bit of TLC after the winter so I roped in Sarah-Jane from the RSPB and Claire from Upton Country Park to put on our waders and get stuck in!
We started by clearing brambles from around the edges and scooping out some of the duckweed. Then we pulled out some bulrushes making sure we left enough vegetation for creatures to thrive. It was hard work but well worth it especially as we found all kinds of life including many great water boatman, water hoglouse, a juvenile frog and even a dragonfly nymph!
I look forward to finding these and more with the help from school children in the next few months.
